Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding the Difference Between Engine Types

The motor is blown, for one reason or another, but you love your car, so it is time to replace your vehicle's engine. Do you buy brand new or get a used engine? Well you have several options, but most likely you will not need to buy a brand new engine. New engines, often referred to as crate motors, are generally expensive, and purchased when building a custom car or hot rod. A daily driver vehicle will often warrant a used, rebuilt or remanufactured engine. So what is the difference between them?
Feature Remanufactured Rebuilt Used
Quality Level ✓ Factory Specs ~ Varies ✗ Unknown
Warranty ✓ 1 Year Unlimited ~ Limited ✗ 30 Days Max
All Parts Replaced ✓ Yes ~ Only Failed Parts ✗ No
Testing ✓ OEM Standards ~ Depends on Shop ✗ Minimal
Long-term Value ✓ Excellent ~ Good ✗ Risky

Remanufactured Engines BEST CHOICE

This is an engine remanufactured to the original blueprints and exact specifications, and is tested to original equipment standards. This is the highest quality option for replacing an engine in your car, truck, or SUV.

Remanufactured means that an engine, taken out of a vehicle has been returned to factory condition. The engine core was machined, new pistons, rings, and bearings, along with other parts have been replaced. This allows the engine to operate as if it is brand new.

  • Returned to original factory specifications
  • All wear parts replaced with new components
  • Tested to OEM standards
  • Comes with comprehensive warranty
  • Best long-term value

This is what US Engine Production offers.

Rebuilt Engines MODERATE

A rebuilt engine is one in which the repair is done up to the level of failure. This directly means that the parts replaced are only the ones leading up to the failure for which there was a need of rebuilding; but apart from that, all other components are left intact.

  • Only failed parts are replaced
  • Large percentage of internal parts may be original and worn
  • Testing procedure depends on individual rebuilder
  • Quality varies significantly between shops
  • Limited warranty coverage

Used Engines BUDGET OPTION

Used engines are just that - an engine that has previously run in another vehicle, comparable to the customer's, and then transplanted into that vehicle. These engines usually do not carry a warranty longer than 30 days and can have high mileage on them to begin with.

  • No parts replaced or refurbished
  • Unknown actual mileage and history
  • Very short warranty (typically 30 days)
  • Lowest upfront cost but highest risk
  • May lead to additional expenses down the road

Many people go with a used engine due to the cost savings; however in the long run this can have a damaging effect as the warranty will run out and leave the owner in a financial bind if something goes wrong relatively soon.
